Canadian Temporary Resident Visa (TRV) Process (Part-1)

Canadian new Visa process has some new rules. However, it is just the first step of the 3 step application process in real sense. Will take you through the process as and when it happens.

Here is details of the whole process (till now) which may help any prospective applicants for any Canadian Visa including Visitor, Student or other category.

There are 2 ways to apply for Canadian Visas:

First, the traditional paper based application process

Second, the newly introduced Online Application using CIC account.

Paper Based Application

Here the applicant is required to fill up the forms such IMM 5257 (Visa Application), IMM 5257B (Schedule A which includes details about applicant’s personal history and travel history) and IMM 5645 (Family Information). All these forms can be downloaded and then filled in. They are required to validated and then signed in case of paper application.

Along with ALL other necessary and supporting documents the applicant is required to submit the file at Canadian Visa Application Center which is VFS Canada in case of Bangladesh.

Although it is not completely paper based as it is the VFS which in this case will scan and process the application.

Applicant is also required to provide Bio metrics at the same time unless he or she has previously provided bio metrics for the purpose of Canadian Visa with in last 10 years.

Please note VFS Canada now requires prior Appointment for submission of application and bio metrics.

You will also be asked to submit your passport at this point of time.

Online Application (How I Applied last night)Canada permanent visa

The newly introduced Online Visa Application process will start with you creating an account in the CIC website. Link given below: http://www.cic.gc.ca/engl…/information/applications/visa.asp

After creating an account, you will need to select the few options as per your plan and it will inform you if you can apply online. However under most circumstances you will be eligible to apply for Temporary Resident Visa (TRV) or commonly known as the Visitor Visa online.

Depending on your answers to over few dozens of questions, an application reference code will be generated which will also determine the set of documents you need to submit for your visa application assessment.

Note that this application reference code will be valid for 0 days from the date of generation and you need to complete your application with in these 60 days.

You will then be required to download the forms i.e. IMM 5257 (Visa Application), IMM 5257B (Schedule A which includes details about applicant’s personal history and travel history) and IMM 5645 (Family Information). Fill these forms using Adobe Acrobat 10 or above and validate (there is a validate button on both IMM 5257 & 5257B which will generate a set of Bar Codes. If you are applying online, there is no need to fill in the date and signature portion, as you will be signing it electronically right before the payment page.

You will be required to scan ALL necessary documents and upload it under each requirement. For example: you are needed to provide scan copies of ALL Previous Passport Bio Page, Entry Stamps and Visas under travel history.

The weird part of the Online Application process was the restriction on number of files under each head! The applicant is allowed to submit only 1 file and ALL documents under that head must be put into a single file whose size cannot exceed 4MB. (It took me a long time and several failed attempt to fit 7 previous passports which sums up to almost 200 pages into one single file of 4MB. But eventually succeeded).

Once you finish uploading all the forms and the required documents, you can proceed to next step, i.e. re-checking your application and electronically signing it before heading for payment.

Unless you have provided Bio metrics for purpose of Canadian Visa Application in last 10 years, you will be required to give bio metrics and the CIC system charges the applicant both Application Fee (CAD 100) and Bio metrics Fee (CAD 85), i.e. total of CAD 185 which is around USD 140 at once. You will need access to a Credit Card or Debit Card using which you can pay this amount.

Apparently it takes a couple of days for the CIC to send you this letter and with the bio metrics request letter I will be required to head to the closest VAC (can be in any country/ any city) and provide bio metrics.

After bio metrics is provided the actual application processing will begin.

The process involves another set of instruction as well, i.e. when to submit the passport if the application is approved or a further verification is needed as in case of Student/ Resident Visa application.
