About Gulf Air
Gulf Air the flag carrier of Bahrain. Headquartered in Muharraq, adjacent to Bahrain International airfield, the airline operates scheduled services to fifty destinations in twenty seven countries across Africa, Asia and Europe. Its main base is Bahrain International airfield. it had been at one time a international airline in hand by Bahrain, UAE, Oman, and Qatar.
Gulf Aviation as operating company
In the late 1940s, Freddie Bosworth, a British pilot and entrepreneur, began an air taxi service to Doha and Dhahran from Bahrain. Bosworth later expanded service and, on twenty four March 1950, registered Gulf Aviation Company restricted as a personal property company. This makes its current operative company, Gulf Air, one amongst the oldest carriers within the Middle East. The first fleet contained seven Avro Ansons and 3 de Havilland DH.86B four-engine biplanes.
In October 1951, British Overseas Airways Corporation (BOAC) became a significant investor in Gulf Aviation, holding a 22nd stake through the BOAC Company BOAC Associated companies.
Full national ownership
In 1973 the governments of the Emirate (now Kingdom) of Bahrain, the State of Qatar, the Emirate of United Arab Emirate’s capital and also the state of Muscat and Oman in agreement to get the BOAC Associated companies holding in Gulf Aviation. the foundation written agreement was signed on one Jan 1974 and gave every government a twenty fifth property in Gulf Aviation, that became a holding company. The operative company was currently branded as Gulf Air and have become the flag carrier for the four states.
With chartered Lockheed L-1011 Tristar and Boeing 737 craft connection the fleet, by 1976 Gulf Air had expanded its route network to incorporate Amman, Amsterdam, Athens, Baghdad, Bombay, Bangkok, Beirut, Cairo, Colombo, Delhi, Dhaka, Hong Kong, Jeddah, Karachi, Khartoum, Larnaca, Manila, Paris, Ras al-Khaimah and national capital. The fleet comprised four Vickers VC10, 3 BAC One-Elevens, 2 Lockheed L-1011 Tristar 200s and 5 Boeing 737–200s. In 1978, the airline doubled the Tristar fleet to replace the VC10s. Meanwhile, the airline increased the Boeing 737 fleet to 9 and phased out the One-Elevens.
